2023 World Amateur Championship passes midpoint

The battles are getting more tense and exciting at the 2023 World Amateur Chess Championship, organized by the Omani Chess Committee in cooperation with FIDE. Round 5 started with the ceremonial move made by Aimen Ahmed al Hosni, the Chief Executive Officer of Oman Airports, Diamond sponsor of the event.

Some games were fiercely competitive, while on other boards, the opponents preferred a more conservative approach.

In the Open U-2300 category, the Kazakhstani FM Abilmansur Abdilkhair (pictured below) continued his hot streak, winning his fifth straight game. He outplayed Burentegsh Aldar of Mongolia in a fierce battle to maintain his leading position halfway through the tournament.

Dashtogtokh Amarsaikhan of Mongolia (pictured below) emerged as the sole leader in the Open U-2000 category. In Round 5, Amarsaikhan prevailed in a tactical game over Sri Lankan Desandhi Dhihansa to score his fifth victory. Alikhan Khazhatuly of Kazakhstan and Indian players Sham R and Ragavesh Velavaa, sitting on 4.5/5, are trailing Amarsaikhan by just a half-point.

In the Open U-1700 category, Round 5 saw the clash of six participants with 4 points each. Aleksandr Martynov (FIDE) defeated Alzaabi Humaidan (UAE), Hamed Imani (Sweden; pictured below) beat Batra Deepak, while the Mongolian derby Batnyam Munkhbat vs Ganbat Danzanjunai ended in a draw. Martynov and Imani share first place with a perfect score.

In the women’s category U-1700, the ninth-seed Bat-Amgalan Anujin of Mongolia (pictured below)bested her fellow countrywoman Naranbold Sodgerelt in a tough game to grab the sole lead. Four players on 4 points are for the second position in the race. Joining Naranbold are Baldanjantsan Khuslenzaya (Mongolia), Binoj Shybi (FIDE) and Arun Aditi (India).

Day 5 of the World Amateur Chess Championship was also marked by another sports activity organized by the Omani Chess Committee. A friendly volleyball match was played between FIDE and OCC officials, arbiters, and players. The FIDE team, led by President Arkady Dvorkovich, proved stronger in this friendly competition.

A thrilling Round 3 at World Amateur Championship 2023

The third round of the World Amateur Chess Championship 2023 was held in Muscat, Sultan Qaboos Sport Complex, on November 4. The first traditional move was made by Eng Ismail Al Sawafi, Senior Manager of Public Relations and CSR at Oman LNG, the Gold sponsor of the event.

The championship is gaining momentum after two rounds, with the top players trying to enhance their positions in all five categories. Some games stretched over five hours as contestants pressed for a win very hard.

The Open U-1700 category saw a surprising turn of events when the top-ranked player, Sergei Inyushkin (FIDE), drew against Yemeni player Nawaf Saleh. There were plenty of exciting games, including Mongolian player Turbat Todmunkh’s victory over Paraguay Osmar and Omani Ahmed Al Rahbi’s loss to Shek Daniel of England. Turbat took the lead after the third round with a perfect score, followed by his teammate Munkhbat, Batnyam.

In the Open U-2000 category, Finland player Esa Ahlqvist put in an impressive performance against the Indian player Ranjith, R.K., to win his third straight game. Sebastian Emil (FIDE) and Desandhi Dhihansa Gamage of Syria also scored victories to share the lead with Esa Ahlqvist.

In the Open U-2300 category, Kazakhstani player Zhuban Bigabylov emerged on top after three rounds, scoring 3/3 alongside his compatriot Abilmansur, Mongolian players Aldar, Burentegsh and Sodbilegt, Naranbold with 3 points each.

A highlight in the category was a fascinating duel between Syrian FM Malek Koniahli and Mahindrakar Indrajeet of India. This exciting game saw several nail-biting moments and ended with a draw.

In the women’s category under 1700, there were several unexpected outcomes. Baldanjantsan Khuslenzaya, from Mongolia, notched up an impressive win against Arun Aditi of India and is now tied for the lead with her compatriots Bat-Amgalan Anujin and Naranbold Sodgerelt.

The Chess Trainers Workshop organized by the Omani Chess Committee organized alongside the championship concluded today after three days of intensive training. Conducted by the International Arbiter / FIDE Trainer Ali Abbas of Syria and Bashir al Qadimi, the coach of the Omani national chess team, the workshop attracted 20 male and female trainers, all eager to enhance their knowledge in chess training.

Amateur Chess Championship – Exciting Competitions Second Round

The second round began with strong competition that was more intense than the first round due to the desire of the players to seize opportunities in order to win and enhance their points of progress in the three categories, as some matches recorded a long time of nearly three hours due to the deliberation that some players show when they fail to make decisions, in Attempts to make the right decision that will enable them to win, while the third round will be held this evening, amid great aspirations from the players to achieve results that will qualify them to reach the podiums.

In the women’s under 1,700 category, national team player Abrar Al Busaidiyah achieved a well-deserved victory over Indian Sarah, and her teammate Al Anoud Al Ghafriya won over Sudanese Rayyan Osama. The 2023 World Amateur Chess Championship, organized by the Omani Chess Committee in cooperation with the International Federation of the Game, continues at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bawshar, during the period from November 2 to 11.

The launch ceremony was held under the patronage of his Excellency Sayyid Saeed bin Sultan Al Busaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth for Culture, who stressed the importance of the Sultanate of Oman hosting the World Amateur Chess Championship to stimulate the economic and tourism aspects.He said while sponsoring the launch of the first move of the tournament competitions:

 

Hosting the tournament is an important aspect of tourism promotion. In extent, whether on the part of the participating players who may later think about visiting the country with their family, or the important promotion achieved through the direct transmission of chess matches through the channels of the International Federation of the game or through other social media channels. As the game of chess receives great attention from the participating, countries have good popularity, so it is an opportunity for these followers to get to know the Sultanate of Oman, and in this context, the tournament also has an important role in getting to know the aesthetics of the capital, Muscat, and the tourism components and cultural and developmental achievements.

World’s top amateur chess players arrive in Oman

MUSCAT: The world’s best amateur chess players are among the more than 400 participants who have arrived in Muscat ahead of the start of the FIDE World Amateur Chess Championships for Open and Women 2023.

Players get into action at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex (SQSC) from Thursday and the nine round event will conclude on November 10.

The prestigious world tournament will be formally inaugurated at the SQSC on Thursday. Organised by the Oman Chess Committee under the auspices of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), a total of 427 players from 64 countries will be in action during the tournament where a total of six titles in three categories are at stake.

The opening ceremony on Thursday will be presided over by Said bin Sultan Al Busaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Youth for Culture, in the presence of Asian and International chess federations’ representatives
